The Life Cycle Story
The Egg
It all begins with a tiny egg, often no bigger than a pinhead, carefully laid on a leaf by a butterfly searching for the perfect host plant.
The Caterpillar
Once hatched, the caterpillar has one job: eat! It munches leaves, sheds its skin, and grows -sometimes 100 times its original size.
The Chrysalis
Inside the chrysalis, something miraculous unfolds. The caterpillar reorganises its entire body into the blueprint of a butterfly.
The Butterfly
A fully-formed butterfly emerges, pumps fluid into its wings, and takes its first flight -one of nature's most breathtaking moments.
Butterfly Spotlight
Migrates up to 4,500 km to overwinter in Mexico.
Found on every continent except Antarctica.
Wings are structurally coloured -no pigment, just light.
Named for the elegant tail-like extensions on its hindwings.
One of the most widespread butterflies in the world.
A strong migrant and fast, powerful flier.
Our Habitat
Wildflower Meadow
Blankets of native wildflowers provide nectar and host plants for dozens of pollinator species.
Host Plant Garden
Milkweed, fennel, parsley -every plant is chosen for the caterpillars that depend on it to grow.
Butterfly Basking Spots
Flat stones warmed by morning sun give butterflies a place to regulate their temperature before flight.
Puddling Puddles
Butterflies gather at damp soil to drink minerals -a behaviour called puddling, often seen in males.
Native Shrubs
Dense native shrubs offer shelter from the wind and predators, and provide overwintering habitat.
Chrysalis Sanctuary
A sheltered section of the garden where chrysalises hang safely while metamorphosis works its magic.
